3 weeks after I spent 45 minutes calming down a $5 million client who was pissed off at the bank, I get a transfer out notice.
He had 30 years with the firm. The bank was treating him like he applied for a loan online.
"I just can't get a hold of them. Why am I having to call you guys about this? Why aren't you reaching out to me?"
I calmed him down. But in my head, I was somewhere else. We'd told him to go with our loan officer. He walked into a branch and went with whoever was closest. The guy wasn't communicating with us, wasn't being proactive, and we had no relationship with him.
I was like, dude, you did this to yourself.
I had 3 more meetings and 2 portfolios to build. There was this mindset at Merrill that once something got handed off to the bank, it was out of our hands. They just sucked, and there wasn't much I could do about it.
Not my problem.
My senior partner walks in.
"What happened with Steve? Feels out of the blue."
"If I had to guess, he's been getting the run around with the bank on that loan."
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Why didn't anyone tell him.
Sh*t.
7 years in wealth management. Every transfer out notice I saw boiled down to the same thing.
Most miscommunication is missed communication.
